StyleEase users can search and download citations from within their StyleEase document (in Word), or they can use our online search web application from any browser. Web app users can store citations in the StyleEase cloud database, and then later download those citations into their StyleEase papers.

]]> <![CDATA[Update to Chicago/Turabian StyleEase for Mac (Word 2011)]]> www.styleease.com/support).]]> <![CDATA[Note for Mac Lion users]]> We have confirmed that installation and use of StyleEase products on MacOS 10.7 (Lion) is working fine, including our new version of StyleEase for Chicago/Turabian Style for MacOS, which will be released on September 1st.

Early installations of Lion apparently had issues with Word and StyleEase; however, if you update your OS before updating to Lion, and if you update Word for Lion, StyleEase is working fine. We believe any Mac-related problems are behind us, and our updated installers are now available.

]]> <![CDATA[Symantec Norton Suspicious.Insight and WS.reputation.1 False Positive reports for StyleEase]]> A number of our users have been reporting that Norton/Symantec antivirus software has been detecting "Suspicious.Insight" or "WS.reputation.1" threats in the Bulk Image Downloader setup executable.

 

This is a false positive. None of our software contains any form of virus, trojan or other malware. All our executables are digitally signed which you can verify to prove that they originate from us and were not tampered with. 

 

Norton recently introduced these 'reputation' checks which basically flag any executable their system hasn't seen before as a possible threat. This is nonsense for smaller software companies and it affects a huge number of companies that regularly release new software. The WS.Reputation.1 reported by Norton is not a virus warning, it means that this file has a low or no reputation among Norton users. 
Considering that Norton has possibly tens of millions of users - StyleEase will never have a high enough reputation to not have problem with such a system. 

As these reports come in we report them to Symantec and wait for them to update their virus definitions. We have been whitelisted, so updated Norton should not cause this issue. 

If you choose to continue using Norton you'll need to configure it to exclude the StyleEase executable (normally located in C:\Program Files\StyleEase) from being checked. Please consult your Norton/Symantec documentation for information on how to do this.

 

Clarification on WS.Reputation.1 detection

"There have been several recent posts about the WS.Reputation.1 detection.  In order to clear things up, we thought it was important to explain this detection and provide more information about how you should deal with it.  First off, we have published a write-up on our Security Response site.  Please see the information here - http://www.symantec.com/en/uk/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2010-051308-1854-99.  The text reads:

 

WS.Reputation.1 is a detection for files that have a low reputation score based on analyzing data from Symantec’s community of users and therefore are likely to be security risks. Detections of this type are based on Symantec’s reputation-based security technology. Because this detection is based on a reputation score, it does not represent a specific class of threat like adware or spyware, but instead applies to all threat categories. 

 

The reputation-based system uses "the wisdom of crowds" (Symantec’s tens of millions of end users) connected to cloud-based intelligence to compute a reputation score for an application, and in the process identify malicious software in an entirely new way beyond traditional signatures and behavior-based detection techniques.

 

Now, like any security technology, there is a small chance that we have made a mistake on a file.  We are constantly tuning the reputation system to avoid these problems, but they do occur on occasion.  If you believe a file has been mistakenly detected by WS.Reputation.1, you can submit a dispute at https://submit.symantec.com/dispute/.  This page is monitored 24 hours a day so that we can immediately begin to research and correct any issue. 

Restoring a file from Quarantine

(Please see attached pdf of the website, in our Knowledge Base article of the same name, for how to follow these steps)

If you are confident that you are experiencing a false positive and cannot wait for the dispute process, the product allows you to manually remove items from quarantine.  To do so, open the main window and click on the “Quarantine” link

From the quarantine window, select the file that you wish to restore and click on the “options” button under the recommended action.

From the threat detection window, select the “Restore this file option” to restore your file.

Most of the changes in these releases related to updates to our registration system to better support our institutional users: easy to use site licensing and easy writing lab multi-user licenses are now available.

If you are running our latest version (released August 5, 2010), you should definitely install this update, which fixes a significant registration issue for notebook users of StyleEase.

If you have the 64-bit version of Office 2010 on your computer (Microsoft installs the 32-bit version by default, but you may have chosen to install the 64-bit version), you should install this update, which fixes a problem with accessing the StyleEase store from within your documents; otherwise, there are no significant code changes in this version, so you need not update, though you are welcome to do so.]]> <![CDATA[Updates June 24, 2010]]> installed the 64-bit version of Office 2010.

This release specifically fixes problems with the 64-bit version of Word
2010, which requires a different set of operating system calls.

If you had a version of StyleEase that did not work on Word 2010, you
